Shizuoka Plain

The Shizuoka Plain is a flat landscape near Suruga Bay, formed by river deposits accumulated over many periods. These nutrient-rich soils support intensive cultivation of rice, tea, and other crops across a wide area.

This area has been a rice-growing center since ancient times, as shown by archaeological finds from the Yayoi period. Regular river floods deposited layers of sediment that prepared the soil for farming over many centuries.

The land shapes daily rhythms through farming - rice and tea cultivation define the seasons for those who live here. This agricultural work is woven into the local identity and gives the landscape its character.

The plain sits along the main Tokaido rail corridor and is easily reached from Shizuoka Station. To experience the fields and landscape, local transport or walking is the best approach.

The green tea varieties grown here develop their distinctive flavor from the region's unique soil conditions built up over centuries. This tea tradition has been passed down through generations and makes this one of Japan's most important tea-producing areas.
