Sakurai, Administrative city in Nara Prefecture, Japan

Sakurai spans across 98.92 square kilometers of land in the Kansai region, with a population density of 590 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The city held the status of Japan's capital during Emperor Yuryaku's reign from 457 to 479, with the Imperial court operating from Hatsuse no Asakura Palace.

Omiwa Shrine stands as one of Japan's earliest Shinto establishments, where sake dealers collect wooden sugi balls as traditional religious objects.

The transportation network includes the West Japan Railway Company Sakurai Line, Kintetsu Railway Osaka Line, and three national routes for regional connectivity.

Multiple emperors constructed their palaces within Sakurai's boundaries, including Iware no Mikakuri, Nimiki, Iware no Tamaho, and Osata no Sakitama Palace.
