Riverwalk Kitakyushu, shopping mall in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan
Riverwalk Kitakyushu is a large shopping center in Muromachi featuring distinctive curved architecture and bright colors. The complex houses shops, cafes, restaurants, a cinema, a children's playhouse, and an art museum, all connected by wide open pathways.
The center was designed by American architect Jon Jerde with a modern curved form and sits along the Murasaki River. It is part of Kitakyushu's effort to connect the urban space with the river's natural surroundings and keep the waterfront active as a living place.
The name Riverwalk reflects its connection to the river and the idea of strolling along the water. The center serves as a gathering place for locals and visitors, where people spend time shopping, eating, or simply relaxing and shaping the rhythm of daily life in the city.
The center is about a three-minute walk from JR Nishikokura Station and has convenient parking nearby. Most shops open late morning and close in the evening, while restaurants and entertainment options stay open late into the night.
The center integrates an art museum with rotating exhibitions directly into its daily structure, bringing art into the everyday lives of people. Visitors can also rent traditional kimonos nearby and walk around in traditional clothing to take photos.
