Tsurumi-ku, Administrative ward in Yokohama, Japan.
Tsurumi-ku is a ward in northeastern Yokohama that stretches along the coast of Tokyo Bay. The district contains residential neighborhoods with low-rise housing, factories near the waterfront, and parks with walking paths.
The area developed over centuries as a coastal settlement before becoming an official ward in 1927 during Yokohama's administrative reorganization. Industry grew rapidly here after World War II and shaped the current character of the district.
The name Tsurumi means "crane watching" and refers to the marshlands that once covered this coastal area. Today the ward shows a mix of quiet residential streets and factory complexes, with residents using local parks and waterfront paths throughout the day.
Several train lines run through the ward and connect the area to central Yokohama and Tokyo. Wide roads follow the coast and cut through residential neighborhoods, with some stretches near the factories showing an industrial character.
Mitsuike Park features over 70 cherry tree varieties and ranks among the most diverse collections in Japan. During spring bloom season the trees display different shades from white to deep pink and flower at different times.
