Moyale, Border crossing point in eastern Africa
Moyale is a town straddling two countries, with its Ethiopian section serving as an administrative center and its Kenyan part located in Marsabit County. The settlement developed as a shared crossing point shaped by its border location.
Fort Harrington was established in the early 20th century by Philip Zaphiro and marked the beginning of the town's development as a permanent settlement. This fortification laid the foundation for what would become a key crossing point.
The town is home to Borana, Gabra, and Somali communities whose daily customs shape how people interact and celebrate together. These groups share the same streets, markets, and gathering spaces, creating a layered social fabric.
The One Stop Border Post has processed immigration, customs, and health clearances jointly between Ethiopian and Kenyan authorities since June 2021. Travelers should expect administrative procedures handled in one location.
The town experiences two distinct rainy seasons annually, with the longer period spanning March through May and a shorter one in October and November. These rainfall patterns shape when water becomes abundant and when the landscape transforms.
