Olkaria–Lessos–Kisumu High Voltage Power Line, Electricity transmission infrastructure in Western Kenya.
The Olkaria-Lessos-Kisumu power line is high-voltage transmission infrastructure that carries electricity from geothermal plants across Western Kenya to distribution points. It stretches across the landscape using double circuit cables mounted on tall metal towers that dot the region.
Construction began in 2018 with backing from Japanese and Kenyan government agencies. The project emerged to distribute renewable energy from geothermal sources across longer distances to reach more communities.
The transmission line development reflects Kenya's commitment to providing electrical infrastructure for communities from Naivasha through Lessos to Kisumu.
The line runs through several counties and is visible from various vantage points along main roads. You can observe the transmission towers from driving routes and rural areas throughout the region.
The system operates at three different voltage levels depending on distance and demand. This stepped approach allows efficient adjustment of power distribution to different substations and service areas.
