Boryeong Mud Festival, Festival in South Korea
The Boryeong Mud Festival is a summer event held on Daecheon Beach that spans multiple weekends and draws visitors with mud-based activities. The program includes mud baths, obstacle courses in the mud, and various playful activities centered on the local therapeutic mud material.
The festival began in 1998 as a marketing initiative to promote the cosmetic properties of the local mud from the Boryeong flats. Since then it has grown from a promotional effort into a major annual gathering that draws tens of thousands.
The festival has become a popular event where mud activities mix with live music and Korean pop performances. Visitors experience how the local community connects its identity with modern entertainment.
The event occurs each year at Daecheon Beach and typically spans two weekends in July. Visitors should bring swimwear and old clothes since activities leave you thoroughly muddy, and there are showers on site for rinsing off.
Particularly popular is the so-called mud prison zone, where visitors playfully get locked inside a large container filled with mud. This element is more theater than actual confinement and offers amusing contrast to the more serious spa activities.
