Buyeo Muryangsa, Buddhist temple at Mount Mansusan, Buyeo, South Korea
Buyeo Muryangsa is a Buddhist temple at Mount Mansusan in Buyeo, with a complex layout featuring halls, pagodas, and gates arranged along Mansu-cheon Stream at the mountain's base. The structures are organized across multiple levels connected by pathways and stairs, reflecting traditional Korean temple design.
The temple was established during King Munseong's reign in the 9th century and later rebuilt after its destruction during the 1592 Imjin War. This reconstruction was part of broader efforts to restore the site's spiritual role following the conflict.
The Geukrak-jeon Hall displays three large statues created by monk Hyeonjin, with Amita-bul positioned in the center, recognized as Korean Treasure number 1565.
Access is through Iljumun Gate, across Mansu-cheon Stream, and then through Cheonwangmun Gate to reach the main temple. Wear comfortable shoes as the route involves multiple levels with stairs and uneven surfaces.
The Five-Story Stone Pagoda blends architectural elements from the Baekje Kingdom and Later Silla Dynasty, containing gilt-bronze statues inside. This mixed design shows how different historical periods came together in a single structure.
