Temple of Bacchus, Roman temple in Baalbek, Lebanon

The Temple of Bacchus features 42 Corinthian columns reaching 20 meters in height, with 19 columns remaining intact along its peripheral walls.

Built during the second century CE under Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, the temple experienced partial damage from earthquakes in 1759.

The temple walls display detailed carvings of Maenads and other decorative elements that reflect Roman religious practices and architectural techniques.

The structure measures 66 meters in length, 35 meters in width, and contains two main sections: a 30-meter nave and an elevated sanctuary.

The columns of this temple were carved and decorated directly on site rather than being completed elsewhere and transported.
