Plain of Zgharta, Archaeological site in Tripoli, Lebanon
The Plain of Zgharta is an archaeological site east of Tripoli with terraced land and remains of ancient tools from early settlements in Lebanon. The excavation areas lie across a rolling landscape where many stone tools have been uncovered.
Researchers began examining this place in 1945 and found ancient tools initially classified as Mousterian. It was later determined these tools belonged to a culture known as the Qaraoun culture.
The archaeological findings here show how people transitioned from hunting to farming in ancient times. This shift happened during a period when daily life in this region was fundamentally changing.
The site lies about 7 kilometers east of Tripoli and is accessible year-round for visits. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the ground is uneven and walking crosses various elevation levels.
The soil here consists of very old river deposits locally called Conglomerates of Zgharta. This soil type allowed the region to cultivate olives and benefit from them over many generations.
