Angammedilla National Park, National park in North Central Province, Sri Lanka

Angammedilla National Park is a protected area in the North Central Province covering 7,528 hectares of dry evergreen forests with mountains, plains, and the Amban River along its southern border. The terrain combines forest habitats with open landscapes and river ecosystems.

The area originated as part of the Minneriya-Girithale Sanctuary, established in February 1988 to protect vital water resources. It became an independent park in 2006 with stronger conservation measures.

A stone canal system, known locally as the royal wall, shows ancient Sinhalese engineering and directs water from the Amban River to the Parakrama Samudra irrigation tank. This waterway shapes the landscape today and reflects how water management once structured the region.

The park is accessed through marked entry points, and permits are required for wildlife observation and photography activities. Visit early in the morning when animals are most active and light conditions are best for viewing.

The park functions as a protection zone for three major irrigation tanks: Parakrama Samudra, Minneriya, and Girithale. These reservoirs feed a large network of farmland and show how conservation and traditional water management work together.
