Koulikoro Region, Administrative region in western Mali
Koulikoro Region is an administrative area in western Mali stretching along the Niger River with varied landscapes ranging from flat plains to sandstone plateaus. The river shapes the territory, with fertile valleys contrasting with drier upland areas.
The area was a center of several major medieval empires like the Mali Empire and served as an important trade hub. Its strategic location on the Niger made it contested ground between competing powers.
The Bambara people shape the cultural life through puppet theater and storytellers who preserve their traditions during local celebrations. Visitors can witness these forms of expression in villages and during market gatherings.
Visiting is best during the dry season when roads are more accessible and temperatures are less extreme. The region is easiest to explore using local transport, with a guide helpful for orientation.
The region hosts one of West Africa's most important river ports, serving as a gateway for trade between the interior and the rest of Africa. Additionally, a historic railway line connects the region to Senegal and reflects colonial trade networks.
