Bataan

Bataan is a province on the Bataan Peninsula in western Luzon, with Balanga serving as its capital. The coastline runs along Manila Bay to the north and the South China Sea to the west, while the interior features mountains and forests.

During World War II in 1942, around 76,000 soldiers endured a forced march exceeding 100 kilometers (62 miles) to prisoner camps after the surrender. This march shaped the region's history and is honored in memorials.

The Mount Samat shrine rises above the peninsula with a large cross commemorating the soldiers who defended the territory. Visitors can climb the tower and look out over the landscape where the historical events unfolded.

The province can be reached from Manila by road, with the journey taking several hours. Coastal towns often serve as starting points for beach and nature exploration, while the interior remains accessible through mountain roads.

The Pawikan Festival in Morong municipality focuses on protecting marine turtles that nest on local beaches. Community programs involve residents in monitoring and preserving nesting sites, with educational activities supporting the efforts.
