Saint Nicholas church - Băneasa

Saint Nicholas church - Băneasa, Orthodox church in Băneasa district, Romania

Saint Nicholas Church is an Orthodox house of worship in the Băneasa district of Bucharest with a cross-shaped floor plan and a distinctive octagonal bell tower. The building sits on elevated ground accessed by stone staircases, while its facade displays circular medallion decorations and other architectural details.

Construction started in 1768 as a chapel for the Văcărescu family estate and was completed in 1792, with the original vault paintings surviving to this day. The octagonal bell tower was added later in 1940 as an enhancement to the earlier structure.

The church follows traditional Eastern Orthodox design principles that shaped the local religious architecture of the area. Visitors notice the distinctive cross-shaped structure and architectural features that reflect the building traditions of the period.

The building is located on București-Ploiești Road in northern Bucharest, close to Lake Băneasa, and remains open for religious services. The elevated position and stone staircases offer good visibility from the street but require climbing several steps to reach the entrance.

The narthex, the vestibule before the main church space, extends generously with a polygonal apse, an architectural feature rarely found in such prominent form in this region. This spatial arrangement creates a special acoustic and spatial quality that visitors notice immediately upon entering.
