Al-Fadhili back to back HVDC converter station, HVDC converter station in eastern Saudi Arabia.
Al-Fadhili is a power conversion station in eastern Saudi Arabia that links the country's 60 Hz electrical system with neighboring Gulf countries operating at 50 Hz. The facility comprises three identical transmission pole sets capable of handling 600 MW per pole.
The station began operations in 2009 and was the first HVDC installation in the Middle East, built by Areva T&D to convert large quantities of power between grids with different frequencies. This project aimed to strengthen electricity supply links between Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf region.
The station represents regional cooperation among Gulf Cooperation Council members through shared power management and infrastructure development initiatives.
The station normally operates in standby mode and activates when significant power shortages occur in connected grids, providing rapid response to grid imbalances. This is a specialized technical facility with restricted public access under normal circumstances.
A Dynamic Reserve Power Sharing system monitors grid frequency automatically and adjusts power flow when electrical fluctuations occur. This technology can balance power shortages within seconds, which is critical for keeping the region's electricity system stable.
