Masjid al-Taneem, Mosque in northern Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Masjid al-Taneem sits roughly 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) north of the Sacred Mosque along the road linking Mecca to Medina. The modern building covers 84,000 square meters (904,167 square feet) and holds 15,000 worshippers with tall doorways and windows shaped by Islamic design.
The site marks the spot where Aisha, wife of Prophet Muhammad, entered Ihram during the Farewell Pilgrimage in the tenth year of Hijra. Later, a mosque was built here to honor this event and serve pilgrims as a Miqat point.
Residents of Mecca and visitors already in the city enter the state of Ihram here when they wish to perform an additional Umrah. The site serves as a ritual threshold for those already within the sacred boundary who still want to begin the pilgrimage.
Access is straightforward along the Medina road, and the large capacity usually allows a calm visit even on busier days. Tall openings bring natural light and air circulation inside.
The mosque carries two names: Masjid al-Taneem after its location and Masjid Aisha in reference to the wife of the Prophet. Both names are used equally and point to place and event at the same time.
