Sanganeb Marine National Park, Marine national park in Red Sea, Sudan
Sanganeb Marine National Park is a protected marine area in the Red Sea off Sudan's coast covering approximately 26,000 hectares. More than 120 coral reefs form an atoll-like structure rising from waters reaching depths of 800 meters.
The area was established in 1990 as Sudan's first marine protected zone. A 50-meter lighthouse built between 1958 and 1964 marks the site and historically guided maritime navigation in the Red Sea.
Local fishing communities use traditional methods passed down through generations to work within these protected waters. Their presence shapes how the marine environment is valued by people who depend on it daily.
The park is accessible only by boat from Port Sudan, with specialized vessels providing accommodation and transportation to different dive sites. Conditions change with seasons, so planning ahead and checking local weather patterns helps ensure a smooth visit.
The area supports 86 coral species across its reefs and hosts more than 250 recorded fish species. This abundance makes it a destination where visitors can observe marine life found nowhere else together in such concentration.
