Gästrikland, Historical province in eastern Sweden
Gästrikland is a historical province in eastern Sweden spanning forested hills, numerous lakes, and a rocky Baltic coastline across its territory. The area is organized into four municipalities, with Gävle serving as the primary economic hub.
The region became a separate territory during the 14th century after breaking away from an adjacent area. Mining and iron production industries then grew to become major economic drivers in the region.
The province displays an elk on its coat of arms and recognizes the Lily of the valley flower and Capercaillie bird as regional symbols that connect to local identity.
The area is easily navigable with Gävle as the main hub for visitor services and information. The wooded landscape and network of towns make it accessible for exploring on foot or by car.
The territory marks the southernmost point of the Norrland region and functions as a natural gateway to northern Sweden. This geographic location makes it a transition point between the different landscapes of northern and central Sweden.
