Tartus Governorate

Tartus Governorate extends across 1,892 square kilometers along Syria's western border, comprising half of the country's Mediterranean coastline and five offshore islands.

The territory of Tartus contains numerous medieval fortifications, including the Crusader Castle of Tartus and multiple Ismaili strongholds constructed during different periods.

The Al-Hamidiyah area preserves the traditions of its Cretan Greek community, descendants of refugees who settled there during the 1897 conflict.

The governorate divides into five administrative districts - Tartus, Duraykish, Baniyas, Shaykh Badr, and Safita - with 27 sub-districts managing local affairs.

The region maintains archaeological treasures from multiple civilizations, including the Phoenician ruins of Amrit and the Bronze Age settlement at Tell Kazel.
