Iskanderkul, Mountain lake in Sughd Province, Tajikistan.
The triangular lake spans 3.4 square kilometers at 2195 meters elevation, reaching depths of 72 meters in the Fann Mountains range.
The lake's name originates from Alexander the Great, as Iskander is the Persian pronunciation of Alexander, while kul means lake in Turkic languages.
Local inhabitants share tales about Alexander's horse Bucephalus, which reportedly emerges from the waters during full moon nights after drowning in the lake.
Visitors can access the lake through shared taxis from Dushanbe or Penjakent, with accommodation available at Turbaza Cottage Park on the northern shore.
The surrounding 300-square-kilometer nature reserve contains diverse ecosystems, from water meadows to juniper forests and mountain shrubland.
