Iskanderkul, Mountain lake in Sughd Province, Tajikistan.

Iskanderkul is a triangular mountain lake situated in the Fann range at approximately 2195 meters elevation. The water body stretches across several kilometers and reaches depths of around 72 meters, making it a substantial freshwater lake in this alpine terrain.

The lake was named after Alexander the Great, with Iskander being the Persian form of his name combined with kul, meaning lake in local languages. This naming reflects how the region's history became woven into its geography through centuries of settlement and trade.

The name connects to Alexander the Great through local oral traditions and stories passed down among mountain communities. The place holds symbolic meaning as a natural landmark tied to historical memory rather than daily cultural practice.

The best time to visit is during warmer months when mountain passes remain open and weather is more stable. Visitors should prepare for high altitude conditions and bring appropriate gear, as the location is remote with a harsh alpine climate.

The area surrounding the lake is protected as a nature reserve encompassing diverse habitats ranging from wet meadows to forests and mountain vegetation. This ecological variety transforms the location into more than a simple water body, revealing the complex natural systems of the high mountains.
