Malatya, Industrial metropolis in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey
Malatya is a city in eastern Turkey that spreads over a flat plain between the Tohma River and the foothills of the Taurus range. The layout includes wide streets, modern housing blocks, and a mix of newer commercial buildings alongside older structures.
The city was built at its current location in 1838 after residents abandoned the earlier Roman site of Melitene. In ancient times, the Hittite settlement of Milid stood in the region and was later developed under different rulers.
Malatya's population expanded through multiple civilizations, including Persian Sasanids, Arabs, Armenians, and Seljuq Turks, each contributing to local traditions.
The city sits at a crossroads between the Black Sea coast and Syria, where several overland highways and rail lines meet. A visit requires some time to explore, as the different districts cover a large area.
The apricot orchards around the city supply a large share of the world's dried fruit harvest. During harvest season, the drying racks and the smell of ripe fruit shape the surrounding landscape.
