Pertek, District seat in Tunceli Province, Turkey
Pertek is the administrative seat of the district by the same name in Tunceli Province, located in eastern Turkey and covering around 858 square kilometers. The area includes approximately forty-five villages and seventy-five hamlets spread across the rural landscape.
The original settlement moved to a new location in 1838 from its place near the citadel. The former town was later flooded by the Keban Dam reservoir.
Two Ottoman mosques from the 16th century were taken apart and rebuilt in new locations to protect them from flooding waters. These buildings reflect the religious traditions of the area and show how the community has worked to preserve its heritage.
The town is best reached by the main road that runs through the area and connects the scattered settlements. Most visitors explore the central marketplace first and then travel to individual villages or the dam site.
A medieval fortress now rises from the water of the dam as an island, creating an unusual sight in the transformed landscape. This sunken castle has become a symbol of the transformation that reshaped this place.
