Lake Beyşehir, lake in Turkey
Lake Beyşehir is Turkey's largest freshwater lake, located across Konya and Isparta provinces with numerous islands, sandy beaches, and limestone caves. The water remains shallow near the shores but reaches depths of about 10 meters, and supports populations of carp, perch, tench, and other fish species.
The lake was declared a National Park in 1993 to protect its natural beauty and wildlife. Nearby historical sites like Kubad-Abad Palace and Maiden's Fortress reflect the region's long history of settlement and cultural development.
The lake serves as a breeding ground for cormorants, herons, and birds of prey that nest on its islands. The reed-lined shores and calm waters shape how local people and visitors experience the natural environment.
The water is shallow along the edges, making it good for swimming, while boat rides and shoreline walks are also popular activities. Fall, especially September and October, offers the best conditions for bird watching as large flocks arrive during this period.
Pelican colonies breed here at rare sites not found elsewhere in Turkey, making it one of the country's few places where these birds reproduce successfully. Additionally, the nearby town of Yeşildağ, about 30 kilometers away, hosts thousands of nesting storks each year.
