深坑黃氏興順居, Traditional heritage residence in Banqiao District, Taiwan.
The Xingshun Residence of the Huang Family (深坑黃氏興順居) is a traditional courtyard dwelling in Banqiao District, Taiwan, built in the southern Chinese domestic style common to Hoklo settlers. The compound consists of several connected wings arranged around a central courtyard, with a symmetrical front facade and decorated wooden beams throughout.
The Huang family were among the Hoklo migrants who settled in Banqiao during the 19th century and prospered through trade. The residence was built during this period of growth, when successful merchant families in the area began replacing earlier timber homes with more solid stone and brick structures.
The layout of the residence follows a pattern common to Hoklo families in Taiwan, where the central hall was reserved for ancestor worship and formal gatherings. Visitors can still see the altar area and the carved decorations that surrounded it, which give a sense of how daily and ceremonial life overlapped.
The site is easy to walk through on your own, though the labels and information panels are mainly in Chinese, so a guided visit helps if you want to understand the details of each room. Visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter, giving you more time to look around without crowds.
Despite the name referencing Shenkeng (深坑), the residence is located in Banqiao, which points to historical relocations or territorial shifts within the family's history. This gap between name and location is itself a small clue about how settler families moved and identified with different places over time.
