Zuoying Naval Base is Taiwan's largest navy facility, located in Kaohsiung with an airfield, docks, and buildings for ships and crew. The installation is large and active, with navy personnel working and training daily, and various ship types ranging from fast patrol vessels to supply ships.
In September 1949, Taiwan moved its naval academy from Xiamen to Zuoying, and a fortress was built there a few months later, standing today as a symbol of military strength. The area's military significance traces back to the Zheng period, when soldiers were stationed here to guard the land and sea.
The name comes from military units that were stationed here during the Zheng period, and this heritage remains visible in the temples and annual celebrations like the Wannian Folklore Festival, where locals hang blessing cards on a large Fire Lion statue. The nearby military dependents' villages reflect the traditions of families who arrived after 1949, creating neighborhoods with customs from different regions of mainland China.
The base is located by the coast with a strategic position for monitoring waters, offering clear views of ships and harbor activities. Visitors should expect that some areas are restricted for security reasons and should stay on designated paths.
