Eastern Region, Administrative region in eastern Uganda
The Eastern Region is an administrative division in eastern Uganda comprising several districts including Bugiri, Busia, Iganga, and Kamuli. Its administrative center is located in the city of Jinja, which serves as the region's main hub.
Before Uganda's independence in 1962, the region operated as a British provincial territory under the authority of a Provincial Commissioner. Following independence, the administrative structure was reorganized and the region evolved into its current system of local governance.
The region is home to several ethnic groups including the Basoga, Bagisu, and Bakedi peoples, each speaking distinct languages and maintaining their own customs. Visitors can observe these differences in local markets, crafts, and community celebrations.
The region is best explored using local transportation options, with Jinja serving as the main logistics hub. Travelers should expect varying road conditions and consider consulting local guides or information centers to navigate the different districts.
The region serves as Uganda's economic backbone with significant industrial activity and trade, particularly around Jinja. This industrial presence shapes daily life and economic opportunities across the area.
