Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, Protected wildlife area in Karamoja, Uganda.
Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is a protected area north of Mount Elgon with grasslands, woodland savannah, and forest patches spread across a large landscape. The reserve contains water sources and varied terrain that supports different animal species throughout the year.
The southern part was established in 1958 and the reserve expanded northward, receiving its current name in 1964. This expansion reflected growing efforts to protect wildlife across a larger area.
The name comes from the Karamojong people and their traditional pastoral way of life in this region, where different groups shared grazing lands and water sources.
The dry season is the best time to visit since roads are passable and animals gather at water sources, making them easier to spot. Basic lodging is available near the reserve, providing a simple base for exploring the area.
The reserve holds Uganda's last remaining roan antelope population and serves as a reintroduction site for giraffes brought from other protected areas. These species are found nowhere else in the country living wild.
