Washington metropolitan area, Capital metropolitan region in Washington DC, United States.

This capital region covers roughly 4,000 square miles (10,360 km²) and takes in parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia around the District of Columbia. It includes dense urban neighborhoods along the Potomac River and sprawling suburbs that extend in all directions toward rolling hills and wooded landscapes.

This region grew after 1790, when Maryland and Virginia ceded land to create the federal capital. It expanded greatly during the 20th century as federal agencies and defense facilities emerged during and after both World Wars.

People from around the world have settled here and created neighborhoods with their own food traditions, shops, and community centers. On weekends, public parks and markets fill with families speaking different languages and celebrating festivals from their home countries.

Public transport connects city districts with suburban communities through metro lines, commuter trains, and bus routes that run in both directions. Visitors exploring the region should avoid rush hours in the morning and evening when commuters fill roads and platforms.

More federal agencies, research centers, and security installations are concentrated here than in any other part of the country. This region also holds one of the most educated populations in the United States, with a higher percentage of residents holding advanced degrees.
