Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, research and development facility
Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory is a research facility in West Mifflin dedicated to developing nuclear reactors for naval vessels. The site spans roughly 200 acres and contains laboratories, testing facilities, and advanced computing centers where engineers and scientists design and refine nuclear propulsion systems for submarines and surface ships.
Established in 1949, the facility was named after Cyrus K. Bettis and takes its place on land where his former property stood. It played a key role in developing the first nuclear reactor for the USS Nautilus in the 1950s and later contributed to reactors for other naval vessels and the Shippingport Power Plant, the first large commercial nuclear power facility in the nation.
The facility is not open to the public and is protected by fencing and access controls due to its nuclear material handling. Visitors can observe the grounds from outside the perimeter and notice its well-maintained landscaping and secure infrastructure, which reflect its commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.
The laboratory once housed two of the world's fastest supercomputers, which were used for complex simulations of nuclear reactor systems and safety calculations. This advanced computing power enabled engineers to solve technical problems that would otherwise be too complex for conventional methods.
