Navoiy Region, Administrative region in central Uzbekistan.
Navoiy Region is an administrative area in central Uzbekistan that spans both flat desert terrain and mountainous landscapes, including portions of the Kyzyl-Kum desert and the Nurata mountain range. The terrain shifts between arid lowlands and higher elevations, creating varied geography across its territory.
The region was established as an administrative division in 1982, though its importance stems from ancient trade routes that crossed Central Asia. Archaeological remains in the Sarmyshsay gorge reveal human settlement spanning many centuries.
The region takes its name from Alisher Navoi, a 15th-century poet whose literary works shaped Central Asian thought for centuries. This connection to his legacy is woven into the region's identity and cultural memory.
The region is accessible by car or rail, with spring and autumn offering the most comfortable visiting conditions when temperatures are moderate. In summer months, bring plenty of water and sun protection, as desert conditions can be extremely hot and dry.
The region contains a major mining and metallurgical complex that ranks among the world's top uranium producers, playing a key role in global energy supply. This industrial operation has fundamentally shaped the region's modern development.
