La Tumba, prison and torture center in Caracas, Venezuela
La Tumba is a detention center and underground prison facility in Caracas, Venezuela, located near Plaza Venezuela. The structure consists of multiple above-ground floors and several basement levels that contain holding cells and interrogation areas.
Construction began in 2005 as an intended Metro office building with 16 above-ground stories and 5 basement levels. After the Bolivarian Intelligence Service SEBIN was reorganized in 2013, the structure became the agency's headquarters and acquired its ominous nickname.
La Tumba is not open to the public and remains closely guarded by security personnel. The site is a restricted military facility with limited public access, and visiting is not permitted under normal circumstances.
The name La Tumba, meaning The Tomb, was not officially assigned but emerged from reports about conditions inside the facility. The nickname reflects public perception of what occurs behind closed walls rather than any architectural feature.
