The Quảng Trị Citadel, constructed in 1824 during Minh Mạng's reign, functioned as an administrative center for the Nguyễn dynasty until 1945.
The town incorporates Vietnamese architectural elements in its citadel design, reflecting the influence of Vauban military engineering principles from the 19th century.
The district-level town maintains a population density of 315 people per square kilometer and serves as the second largest municipality in Quảng Trị Province.
During the 1972 Easter Offensive, Quảng Trị became the only provincial capital in South Vietnam captured by North Vietnamese forces.
