Quảng Trị, Coastal province in North Central Coast, Vietnam.
Quảng Trị stretches along the coast of northern Vietnam with beaches, hills and wide rice fields that run toward the mountains. The landscape shifts between narrow plains near the sea and forested heights in the west, where rivers flow from the border with Laos into the lowlands.
In the early 1970s the demilitarized zone between North and South Vietnam ran through this region, leaving traces of intense fighting across the land. The legacy of those war years still shapes the area today, with scars in the landscape and memorials marking the events.
The Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang in the La Vang Forest represents the principal Catholic sanctuary in Vietnam, attracting religious visitors nationwide.
Visitors find lodgings in small towns along the coast and can explore beaches and historical sites in the surrounding area from there. The best time to travel is between February and July, when rain is lighter and roads are easier to navigate.
In the northern districts visitors still encounter unexploded remnants from the war in the ground, which is why many paths outside the towns remain closed. International organizations continue working to clear these areas and make them safe for farming.
