Six Flags Great America, Amusement park in Gurnee, Illinois.
Six Flags Great America is an amusement park in the Chicago suburb of Gurnee with fifteen roller coasters, including American Eagle featuring two parallel wooden tracks and Batman: The Ride with suspended seating. The complex spans over 300 acres and divides into twelve themed zones with styles ranging from historic to contemporary motifs.
Marriott Corporation began building the facility in 1972 and opened it four years later under the name Marriott's Great America. Six Flags took over the park in 1984 and introduced new themed rides.
The County Fair section features a traditional carousel tower that recalls the spirit of traveling fairs across rural America. This zone connects these older attractions with modern rides in neighboring areas.
The season runs from April through November, with spring and fall weekends generally quieter than summer days. Several restaurants and cafes are spread throughout the grounds, and guest services offer help with orientation and accessibility needs.
The circular layout following the Duell model keeps workshop areas out of sight while allowing short walking distances between all zones. Staff use connecting passages in the inner ring to move from one section to another.
