Little Dipper, Wooden roller coaster in Gurnee, Illinois.
Little Dipper is a small wooden roller coaster at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, built around a figure-eight track layout. The ride is designed for younger children and ranks among the smallest operating wooden coasters in the country.
The coaster was built in 1950 for Kiddieland Amusement Park in Melrose Park, Illinois, where it ran for decades as part of a local family park. When Kiddieland closed in 2010, the ride was moved and reassembled at Six Flags Great America, where it still operates.
For many families in the region, this ride was the first roller coaster their children ever tried, making it a small but meaningful moment in a day at the park. Parents who rode it as children often bring their own kids today, turning a single visit into a shared memory across generations.
The ride sits in the children's area of the park and is easy to spot since it is noticeably smaller than the surrounding attractions. Because it draws mainly younger riders, lines tend to move quickly and waits are usually short throughout most of the day.
Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, the company that built this ride, produced many classic wooden coasters in the mid-20th century, but very few from that era survive in working condition today. This ride is one of the rare remaining examples, kept running through a careful relocation rather than replacement.
