New Gračanica Monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Third Lake, Illinois, United States
New Gračanica Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox religious community situated on 300 acres with a main church building, monastic structures, and walking paths through the surrounding grounds. The complex combines a full-sized church with supporting facilities and natural landscape areas for the resident monks and visitors.
The monastery was established in 1977 and its main church was consecrated in 1984 as an architectural reproduction of the medieval Gračanica located in Kosovo. This project reflected efforts to preserve Serbian Orthodox heritage in North America.
The interior features hand-painted religious artwork created according to Byzantine traditions, shaping how visitors experience the sacred space. These frescoes reflect the spiritual practices of the Serbian Orthodox community and create a link to their ancestral heritage.
Visitors can attend religious services and explore the grounds by walking the marked paths, with particular events held during seasonal celebrations. Access is best during daylight hours and in drier months when the outdoor areas are in better condition.
The wooden entrance doors feature hand-carved depictions of 23 different Serbian monasteries and churches across their surface. These detailed carvings transform the entrance into a crafted record of significant Serbian religious sites.
