Whizzer, Steel roller coaster at Six Flags Great America, United States
The Whizzer is a steel roller coaster at Six Flags Great America that propels riders through tight turns and rapid changes of direction. The ride features an electric spiral lift mechanism and stretches over more than 3,000 feet of track, reaching speeds around 42 miles per hour.
The ride was designed and built in 1976 by engineers Anton Schwarzkopf and Werner Stengel. Originally, the coaster carried the name Willard's Whizzer to honor the founder of Marriott Corporation.
The roller coaster survived removal plans in 2002 when public demonstrations convinced Six Flags management to keep this generation-spanning attraction operating.
Each train seats 24 passengers across six rows, and three separate trains run simultaneously to keep wait times down. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and watch the line length before stepping up, as peak hours can bring crowds.
This speed racer model incorporates an electric spiral lift mechanism and a 64-foot drop, setting it apart from standard roller coaster designs.
