Shockwave, Steel roller coaster at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois
The roller coaster reached speeds of 65 miles per hour and featured seven inversions including three vertical loops, a boomerang, and two corkscrews.
Opening in 1988, Shockwave stood 170 feet tall and held the record for being the tallest and fastest looping roller coaster in the world.
The attraction represented the evolution of roller coaster engineering in the United States during the late 1980s through its innovative design by Ron Toomer.
The operation required continuous maintenance due to track stress, particularly at the first vertical loop where regular repairs ensured passenger safety.
After its closure in 2002, parts of Shockwave found new purposes within the park, with its lift motor now operating on the Demon roller coaster.
