Pico Posets, Mountain summit in Aragon, Spain
Pico Posets rises to 3,375 meters elevation, making it the second-highest peak in the Pyrenees, with steep rock faces and glacial formations visible on its slopes. The mountain offers multiple routes of varying difficulty from different trailheads in the Benasque region.
The first documented ascent occurred on August 6, 1856, when Henry Halkett reached the summit with guides P. Redonnet and P. Barrau via the Ruta Real route. This early expedition was part of the broader mountain exploration movement across the Pyrenees during the 1800s.
The mountain's name comes from 'pocets', meaning water wells, while locals also call this peak Llardana after the dark coloring of its eastern face. This naming reflects how the landscape shaped the region's vocabulary and daily life.
Park in Eriste village and take a bus to the Casada de Espigantosa trailhead to reach this mountain. June through September offers the most favorable climbing conditions and accessibility for most routes.
The Espadas-Posets ridge features grade II+ rock climbing sections and receives fewer visitors than neighboring summits. This allows climbers to experience quieter ascents and more solitude during their time on the mountain.
