Chartreuse du Reposoir, Historical monastery in Le Reposoir, France
Chartreuse du Reposoir is a monastery set at 3280 feet (1000 meters) elevation facing the Aravis mountain range, featuring Gothic vaults and a large cloister. The complex includes several areas, with the church and outer courtyard open to visitors.
The monastery was founded in 1151 by Jean d'Espagne and housed Carthusian monks for centuries. In the 20th century it transformed, first operating as a hotel and later becoming a Carmelite convent under new leadership.
The Carmelite sisters who live here shape the place through their daily prayers and handmade crafts. You can see their handmade products in the shop and feel the quiet that surrounds their communal life.
The church and outer cloister are accessible daily from early morning until evening. When visiting, remember this is an active monastery, so modest clothing and quiet behavior are expected.
The grounds briefly served travelers as a guesthouse in the early 1900s before becoming a religious community. This chapter as a hotel is barely visible today, completely overshadowed by its current spiritual purpose.
