Herend Porcelain Manufactory, Hungarian manufacturing company
The Herend Porcelain Manufactory is a ceramics factory in Herend, Hungary, dedicated to handcrafted porcelain production. The complex features a museum with rotating exhibitions, a mini-workshop where artisans work visible to visitors, a shop, and two dining venues on site.
Founded in 1826, the manufactory grew into a globally recognized maker of fine porcelain. From the 1800s onward, it exported pieces to royal courts and wealthy families across Europe and beyond, gaining international recognition through world fairs and exhibitions.
The name Herend comes from the village itself, showing how deeply the factory is tied to its place. Visitors can see traditional craft methods still practiced today, passed down through families and woven into the local way of life.
The site operates from late March to late October with guided tours offered every 15 minutes in Hungarian and English; advance booking is recommended for groups. The grounds offer parking, restrooms, two restaurants, and a shop, allowing for a full afternoon visit.
Every porcelain piece is signed by the artist who painted it, making each item a personal creation tied to the hand of a master craftsperson. Additionally, the factory works with about 16,000 different shapes and 4,000 patterns, allowing for countless unique combinations.
