Shanghai Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Xuhui District, Shanghai, China.
Shanghai Botanical Garden is a large horticultural space in Xuhui District that spreads across more than 80 hectares with separate zones for magnolias, roses, azaleas, peonies, conifers, maples, osmanthus, and bamboo. The site includes multiple specialized gardens, such as a tropical conservatory housing thousands of plant species in a climate-controlled environment.
The garden began in 1954 as Longhua Nursery before being formally established as a botanical garden in 1974. It evolved from a plant nursery into Shanghai's major facility for plant research and conservation work.
The Penjing Garden section displays traditional Chinese miniature landscapes shaped through regional horticultural techniques passed down over generations. You can observe how plants are carefully cultivated into living artworks that balance rock, water, and vegetation in small spaces.
The site is well served by public transit, particularly Metro Line 3 with stations nearby for easy access. Planning your visit during pleasant weather works best since the grounds are expansive and involve considerable walking throughout.
The tropical conservatory houses plant species from different climate zones packed into one enclosed space, displaying rare varieties rarely seen elsewhere. This specialized collection allows visitors to experience distant ecosystems in one location without traveling far.
