Xuanwu Lake, Urban lake in Nanjing, China
Xuanwu Lake is an urban lake in central Nanjing featuring five interconnected islands and a shoreline of about 15 kilometers. The lake includes different areas with green spaces, walking paths, and open water that invite strolling and spending time outdoors.
The lake formed through geological processes and served as a naval training site during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Later it became an important water space in Nanjing's history.
Each island has its own character: one features drooping willows along the shore, another displays cherry blossoms in spring, a third shows chrysanthemums, and the fourth grows water caltrop plants. These different plantings shape how each area looks and give the lake its varied appearance.
The lake is easily accessible by metro and has walking paths that go around it. The best time to visit is during daytime when the paths are well-lit and there are other people around.
The lake has had many different names over the centuries, including Sangbo and Kunming Lake, before receiving its current name. These changing names show how people's understanding of the place shifted through time.
