Shanghai Daguan Yuan, Urban park in Qingpu, China
Shanghai Daguan Yuan is an urban park along Dianshan Lake that spans roughly 90,000 square meters and features stone bridges, lotus ponds, and traditional Chinese pavilions throughout. The grounds contain landscaping and architectural elements laid out in the style of classical Chinese gardens.
The park was founded in 1988 and incorporates architectural elements and garden designs rooted in Ming and Qing dynasty traditions. It was created to bring together these historical design approaches into a single space for visitors to experience.
The garden draws its layout and decoration from the classical Chinese novel 'Dream of Red Mansions', with wax figures depicting scenes from the story throughout the grounds. Visitors encounter visual reminders of this literary work at many points while walking through the space.
The park offers tea services in the Daguan Building where visitors can enjoy traditional beverages, though bringing your own food is advisable since other dining options are limited. The grounds are accessible and easy to navigate throughout your visit.
Within the grounds, visitors can explore replica residences from the novel, including Jia Baoyu's Yihongyuan and Lin Daiyu's Xiangxiang Pavilion. Walking through these recreated spaces gives a sense of stepping into the world described in the literary work.
