Songjiang University Town, Educational complex in Songjiang district, Shanghai, China
Songjiang University Town is a higher education complex in Songjiang district, Shanghai, bringing together seven universities on a shared campus. The institutions, including Shanghai International Studies University and Donghua University, each operate independently while sharing roads, transit connections, and support facilities.
The complex took shape around 2000 as part of a city plan to expand Shanghai's higher education capacity, with most construction completed by the mid-2000s. The development turned a largely unused part of Songjiang into a major education area within just a few years.
Students from across China gather here, creating a dynamic social environment where different academic disciplines meet and interact daily. Walking through the campus you see this blend of young people in study groups, dining areas, and outdoor spaces.
The campus area is large, so using Metro Line 9, which has a dedicated station here, is the most practical way to get around. Walking between the universities is possible but takes time, so plan accordingly if you want to visit more than one institution in a day.
Although the seven universities are legally separate, they share a road and utility network that was built specifically for this complex. This means students can move between campuses on foot or by local transit and take part in events hosted by neighboring institutions.
