Former site of the Army and Navy Department of Qing Dynasty, Military administrative site in Dongcheng District, China
The Former Army and Navy Department of the Qing Dynasty was the central command hub for all military operations across China from 1644 to 1912. The complex controlled two major military forces and managed campaigns across an enormous territory.
The site was established in 1644 when Manchu conquerors took over China and built a new military system. It ceased operations in 1912 when the Qing Dynasty collapsed and China entered a new political era.
The site served as a training ground where traditional Chinese martial techniques met new military methods. These practices shaped how soldiers understood combat and discipline during the Qing period.
The site can be explored on foot and much of its Qing-era architecture remains visible. Visitors should allow time to walk through the different areas of the complex and observe the structural layout.
The department oversaw creation of the Beiyang Fleet, China's first modern navy equipped with Western-style warships and artillery. This fleet represented a critical moment when China attempted to modernize its military power in a new way.
