Lahn-Dill-Kreis, Administrative district in western Hesse, Germany
Lahn-Dill-Kreis is an administrative district in western Hesse that spreads between forested ridges and valleys and comprises numerous smaller towns as well as rural communities. The landscape alternates between meadows, forests and gentle hills that characterize the central Hessian highlands.
The district came into being in the late 1970s through the merging of older administrative units when Hesse reorganized its territorial structure. This reform brought together places that previously belonged to different jurisdictions.
The area takes its name from two rivers that run through the landscape and continue to shape life in villages and small towns. When you drive through the communities, you notice the closeness to nature that defines how people live.
Travelers who wish to explore the area find starting points in the larger towns for hikes and drives through the hilly landscape. Roads connect the communities with each other and lead through forests and open fields.
The coat of arms shows an eagle beside symbols that reach back to ruling houses outside Germany. This connection to the Dutch royal family is reflected in the old lines of local history.
