Aswan Governorate, Administrative region in Upper Egypt
The Aswan Governorate spans Upper Egypt and encompasses the Nile valley as well as a series of ancient sites and water bodies. The area extends from the banks of the Nile to surrounding desert landscapes, offering a mix of populated areas and remote valleys.
The area has been known as frontier land since ancient times and played a strategic role in protecting Egypt from southern invasions. Construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 20th century fundamentally changed the landscape and created new waterways for trade and transport.

The area is best visited between October and March when temperatures are milder and conditions favor exploration. Most visitors arrive through the city of Aswan, which has good road and air connections and serves as a base for touring.
The area contains several temples that were relocated during construction of the modern dam lakes to preserve them from flooding. This rescue operation in the 1960s marked a milestone in international archaeological cooperation and restoration.
