Temple of Derr

The Temple of Derr is a rock temple featuring two columned halls carved directly into stone. The inner chambers hold statues of Egyptian gods and images of Pharaoh Ramesses II.

Pharaoh Ramesses II ordered the construction of this temple during the 19th Dynasty, between 1279 and 1213 BCE. The building reflects the architectural styles of Nubian temples from that era.

The walls display carved reliefs showing gods like Re-Harakhte and Amun-Re being worshipped. These images tell us about the religious beliefs and practices that were important to ancient Egyptians.

The site sits along Lake Nasser's shores, so planning your visit ahead is important. Getting there requires some preparation since the location is remote and not easily accessible without arrangement.

In 1964 engineers carefully took apart and moved the entire temple structure to higher ground. This rescue operation saved the building from being submerged by waters rising behind the Aswan High Dam.
