Cairo Governorate, Administrative division in northeastern Egypt.
The Cairo Governorate encompasses the capital city and five satellite cities, stretching across 83 square miles along the eastern bank of the Nile River.
The governorate underwent substantial administrative changes in 2008 when the Helwan district separated to form its own governorate, before returning to Cairo jurisdiction in 2011.
The governance structure divides the territory into 38 districts across four main areas, each managed by deputy governors who oversee local administration and development.
The governorate contains multiple industrial zones in Torah and South Helwan, while maintaining essential services through numerous police stations distributed across its districts.
European Union initiatives since 2012 have focused on upgrading informal neighborhoods within the governorate to enhance living conditions for its 10 million residents.
